The OneWho Stayed
Luke 15:17-32 NLT / Pastor Marcus St. Julien
Big idea You can live in the Father's house and still let the fire go out.
Four things the brother lost
1. He stopped
Luke 15:25-27 NLT Meanwhile, the older son was in the fields working. When he returned home, he heard music and dancing in the house, and he asked one of the servants what was going on. "Your brother is back," he was told, "and your father has killed the fattened calf. We are celebrating because of his safe return."
Where have I gone quiet? What did I stop looking for?
2. He stopped
Luke 15:28 NLT The older brother was angry and wouldn't go in. His father came out and begged him,
What room am I refusing to walk into right now?
3. He stopped
Luke 15:29, 31 NLT All these years I've slaved for you and never once refused to do a single thing you told me. And in all that time you never gave me even one young goat for a feast with my friends... Look, dear son, you have always stayed by me, and everything I have is yours.
Romans 12:11 NLT Never be lazy, but work hard and serve the Lord enthusiastically.
What have I stopped asking God for? Why did I stop?
4. He stopped
Luke 15:30, 32 NLT Yet when this son of yours comes back after squandering your money on prostitutes, you celebrate by killing the fattened calf!... We had to celebrate this happy day. For your brother was dead and has come back to life! He was lost, but now he is found!
Whose comeback would be hard for me to celebrate?
Keep the fire lit
Matthew 5:14-16 NLT You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.
Leviticus 6:13 NLT Remember, the fire must be kept burning on the altar at all times. It must never go out.
Honestly, which one am I today?
